RIP Danny McAlinden
Danny McAlinden, who defeated Muhammad Ali's brother on Fight of the Century bill, dies on its 50th anniversary
Former British and Commonwealth heavyweight Champion 'Dangerous' Danny McAlinden (31-12-2, 28KOs), who defeated Muhammad Ali's younger brother Rahman on the undercard of Fight of the Century, has sadly died on its 50th anniversary.
On that fabled night on March 8, 1971, he defeated Rahman on points over six rounds. Born Rudy Clay, the Kentucky fighter was 7-0 at the time and later finished his career at 14-3-1, 7 KOs, in 1972.
Danny, born in Newry, was the first Irishman in history to win the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles. He achieved this by stopping Jack Bodell in two rounds at the Villa Park, the home of Aston Villa Football Club. The event was promoted by Jack Solomons, who staged boxing events for many decades between 1940- 1979.
Residing in Coventry, Danny retired in 1981, after fashioning a career of 31-12, including 28 KO's, and two draws.
It's poignant he passes away, aged 73, to join Ali and Joe on the 50th anniversary of the epic day he shared with them.
