And still… Danny Dignum retains WBO European middleweight title
The Brentwood Centre played host to an incredible #MTKFightNight – as two title fights stole the show in Essex.
Danny Dignum retained his WBO European middleweight title with a ninth round stoppage win over Alfredo Meli after a fantastic battle between the two men, while Sam Gilley dropped Curtis Felix Jr on his way to winning the vacant Southern Area welterweight belt following ten rounds of superb action.
Elsewhere on the card, there were wins for the likes of James Hawley, Steven Donnelly, Mitch Frearson, Liam Wells and many more, on a brilliant show that was broadcast live on ESPN+ and IFL TV.
Here’s all you need to know…
DANNY DIGNUM bt Alfredo Meli TKO9
WBO European middleweight title
Dignum: “Alfredo Meli is quality inside and outside the ring. He’s a really nice person and I’ve got a lot of respect for him.
It was a tough fight, and for the first time ever I found my second wind in a fight. I feel good and I just want to do the best I can.”
SAM GILLEY bt Curtis Felix Jr PTS10
Vacant Southern Area welterweight title
Gilley: “I have wanted this since I was 11. This belt goes over my shoulder but it goes for the whole team too.
“It was a tough fight, and he was a tough geezer. It took until the 10th round for me to knock him down, but I’ve shown that I’ve got power in both hands.”
JAMES HAWLEY bt JOSH ADEWALE PTS6
Hawley:“Huge respect to Josh. He is a proper fighter and he stood there and gave me a hard fight, but I got the job done. If someone comes to fight I will fight back, but I listened to my corner and I got back to my boxing and that won me the fight.
“You’ve got to be fit in this game, and I’m with a world class team that got me as fit as I needed to be. It doesn’t stop here, I’ll keep training hard and keep pushing.”
STEVEN DONNELLY bt Pavel Albrecht TKO3
Donnelly:“It was great to be back in the ring. I haven’t fought since September so it was good to get a few rounds in and it sets me up perfectly for the big fight in May and I’m buzzing for it.
“You’ll see the real Steven Donnelly in eight weeks time. Me and Troy Williamson is a 50-50 fight. We’re both unbeaten and both top amateurs. It’s a fight that everyone wants to see and that’s what boxing is all about.”
Kaisee Benjamin bt SHAQUILLE DAY PTS10
KEVIN REAVELL bt Scott Williams PTS4
MITCHELL FREARSON bt Angel Emilov PTS6
MARTIN MCDONAGH bt Chris Adaway PTS6
JACK MARTIN bt MJ Hall PTS4
RANDAL BARLOW bt Kevin McCauley PTS4
LIAM WELLS bt Zygimantas Butkevicus PTS6
The exciting #GoldenContract semi-finals return later this month, as the light-heavyweights take centre stage at York Hall on March 20, with Hosea Burton, Liam Conroy, Ricards Bolotniks and Serge Michel all vying for a place in the final.
The massive card live on Sky Sports and ESPN+ also features a British and Commonwealth super-lightweight title fight between Akeem Ennis Brown and Phil Bowes, along with an English light-heavyweight title clash as Dan Azeez defends against Andre Sterling.
