Danny Carr claims Southern Area super-featherweight crown
Danny Carr is the new Southern Area super-featherweight champion after shining on a sold out #MTKFightNight in Maidstone.
Although both title hopefuls entered the headline act unbeaten as professionals, the popular ‘Cannon’ had too much for former amateur rival Lewis Adams and was awarded a 96-95 decision.
Elsewhere on the card, talented super-lightweight southpaw Martin McDonagh bounced back from Southern Area title final eliminator defeat with an assured schooling of Lee Connelly.
There were also victories for other emerging local stars in Bradley Haxell, Jack Ewbank, James Hawley and Lenny Fuller.
Here’s all you need to know…
DANNY CARR bt Lewis Adams PTS10
Southern Area super-featherweight title
Carr:“It’s fantastic. For two and a half years now I’ve been writing that goal down and now I’m Southern Area champion.
“It was my first 10-rounder and I was happy with my performance. Hearing that cheer when you first come out is amazing.”
MARTIN McDONAGH bt Lee Connelly PTS6
McDonagh:“I enjoyed every second of it and it was another good performance. I showed I’d learned loads from my defeat.
“I loved the buzz of fighting in front of my own crowd. I’m used to fighting away so it was a great buzz to have with all my people here.”
JACK EWBANK bt Fonz Alexander PTS6
Ewbank:“I absolutely loved it. It was nice and a different atmosphere from York Hall.
“I really enjoyed fighting Fonz. He’s a good character in and out of the ring and he was a step up as well as being tested at six rounds for the first rounds. We passed.”
BRADLEY HAXELL bt Michael Mooney PTS4
Haxell:“I enjoyed that so much. That crowd out there show up and see me fight every time.
“I’m getting better and better with each fight and I’m in no rush. I want to be at Southern Area level soon and we’ll get there. The key is now to stay active and consistent.”
JAMES HAWLEY bt Victor Edagha PTS4
Hawley:“That wasn’t me in there tonight. I’ve been looking a million dollars in the gym and making good kids look ordinary. It’s frustrating I didn’t show that tonight.
“He was very awkward and dipping low and holding but I’m more determined than ever to prove myself and fulfil my potential.”
Lenny Fuller bt MJ Hall PTS4
