British star Daniel Dubois has split from his trainer Shane McGuigan
Dubois and McGuigan have parted ways after a family feud
Daniel Dubois has split from his trainer Shane McGuigan and is set to join forces with Don Charles as his new head trainer.
The reason behind their split has not officially been confirmed, but the reports are that a family feud is the cause for the breakup. This news means Dubois will now face unified heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk without McGuigan in his corner.
According to NoSmokeSport, the pair reportedly fell out following a family dispute but tried to keep the situation under wraps until news broke yesterday after a media day at the McGuigan's gym.
Don Charles' boxing gym is called Punch London and is located in Edgware, London. The experienced trainer is most known for his work with Derek Chisora, guiding the heavyweight through from his debut in 2007 for over a decade where the pair won British, Commonwealth and European titles together, as well as WBO and WBC regional belts. As a team, they also challenged for a world title against WBC champ Vitali Klitschko in 2012, which went the distance.
Charles is also credited for training Frank Buglioni, Ian Lewison, Tom Little, Miles Shinkwin, just to name a few.
Usyk and Dubois failed to negotiate a deal so the fight will now head to purse bids where the highest bidder will win the right to stage the bout.
Former undisputed cruiserweight champion Usyk now holds WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO heavyweight titles, which he won in just his third fight at the weight against Anthony Joshua in London in 2021. He then retained them via split decision 11 months later in Jeddah.
25 from Greenwich, Dubois won his WBA 'Regular' title against Trevor Bryan in June last year. He retained the title in his first defence to Kevin Lerena six months later in London but only after being dropped three times in the first round. South African Lerena is a former cruiserweight champion who is now campaigning at bridgerweight.
Usyk and Dubois were given unti MAy 3 to strike a deal, which was extended, but now the WBA have ordered purse bids for May 25.
