Background
This warring pair have a shared opponent between them in undefeated Irishman Gary Cully (13-0, 7KOs).
Belfast's Joe Fitzpatrick was defeated in the first round against Cully in February 2020, and Newport's Craig Woodruff fought 'The Diva' just six months on in August, but managed to take Cully the distance to a narrow 75-77 points reverse of which saw Cully floored for the first time in his career in round five of eight.
'The Dragon' is a 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games silver medallist that has won the Irish Celtic lightweight title in his 10th fight as a pro, but failed to claim the Irish national title.
'Smiler' from Wales became a Welsh Area lightweight champion in just his fifth fight in 2013 gets the home advantage and a second shot at the Celtic lightweight title. He lost to Cardiff's Mitch Buckland for the belt in his seventh contest, having lost to him already in his third bout a year earlier. His next two defeats were to future British, Commonwealth and European super-featherweight champion Martin Ward and world title contender Luke Campbell. When he challenged for Welsh Area super-lightweight title, he was narrowly defeated by Kieran Gething, who shares the bill with him on the night.
His sixth and final defeat was the close contest he had with undefeated Gary Cully. The fact that they both lost to last same opponent in theor last outings so very differently sets up an intruiging contest for fight fans in Cardiff on the last weekend of the month.
Predictions
Tim Rickson,BBN Editor: “Craig Woodruff is going to be further incentivised by the home crowd getting behind him, as well as the heartche of missing out on winning this title once before. His confidence should be raised knowing that he floored and only very narrowly lost to the same man that blasted his opponent away in 98 seconds. I think he will work his socks off to earn a points win against Joe Fitzpatrick, who will be a dangerous man throughout with seven KOs from 10 victories.”
