Background
Way back in July 2023, rumours were building of a catchweight match between Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr. to reignite British boxing's most famous fighting rivalry, four decades on.
Chris Eubank Sr. and Nigel Benn captured the nation’s imagination with their bitter rivalry during a boom era for British boxing in the early 90s. The pair laid it all on the line in front of millions on terrestrial TV, sharing two legendary battles in 1990 and 1993. Eubank Sr. stopped his fierce foe in the ninth round of their first bruising battle at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
It took three years for the rematch to happen, which took place at a sold-out Old Trafford in Manchester. The clash for the WBC and WBO super-middleweight titles ended in a draw and the pair never fought each other again.
It was in August 2022 when it was officially announced that the next generation were extending the family feud further. However, that was all turned upside down when Benn returned an adverse finding for the banned substance clomifene. The British Boxing Board of Control immediately prohibited the bout from taking place, but Matchroom and Sauerland's lawyers went back and forth in a desperate attempt to save the event. What ensued from there was simply a circus shrouded in cover-ups and mistruths. To this day, whether Benn was innocent or guilty remains a mystery which will never be solved.
16 months later, at least fans may get one answer – who wins this storied rivalry once and for all.
Quotes
Conor Benn: "I can't wait to punch you in the head. Feb 3 I'm ending your career."
Chris Eubank: "Dead man walking."
Predictions
Tim Rickson BBN Editor: "I think everyone is going to be Team Eubank for this one, after all that has happened. It's a much more interesting landscape now that we have witnessed Eubank get knocked out by Liam Smith; something we never expected to see. He has gone to war with big punchers like George Groves and never looked hurt or troubled, so it was a shock to see Smith get to him so badly. The weight they fight at will have a big impact on this fight. If Chris is comfortable making weight, then I think it's his fight to win. I previously discarded any chance of Conor knocking him out, but that's now a possibility. Despite what some fans have said, about no one wanting this fight anymore, I truly believe it's bigger than ever and the build-up is going to be fiery and fascinating! As of right now, I'm backing to Eubank to win."
