Swansea’s Chris Jenkins (22-3-3, 8KOs) is out of his fight with Ekow Essuman (14-0, 5KOs) on March 27.
The British and Commonwealth welterweight champion from Wales suffered a perforated eardrum in sparring this week.
The March 27 Queensberry Boxing event will still go ahead with Sheffield based Scot Willy Hutchinson (13-0, 9KOs) headlining against Halesowen’s Lennox Clarke (19-1-1, 7KOs) for the vacant Super-Middleweight belts.
Botswana-born Nottingham fighter Essuman earned his shot at the Lonsdale belt after winning the English title in 2018 and successully defending the strap twice. The 31-year-old added the IB European welterweight title to his collection in his last fight with Cedrick Peynaud. BoxRec have 'The Engine' ranked at #6, just one place behind his next opponent, Jenkins.
The Welsh 'Rok'n'Rolla' won the British belt when upsetting the defending champion Johnny Garton in March 2019, then added the Commonwealth strap in his his next fight with Paddy Gallagher in August the same year. He finished that busy period with a third championship fight in eight months when he defended the British and Commonwealth titles for the first time together to Liam Taylor in November 2019, but it was ruled as technical decision after Jenkis was cut in the fourth round. It was the second TD result of his career, which has been littered with lacerations. Despite the early ending, the fight was value for money and one that fight fans will be queuing up to see again.
Announcement on a new date is expected shortly.
