Undercard Highlights
European welterweight king David Avanesyan (27-3-1, 15KOs) defends his belt for the fourth time to newest challenger Liam Taylor (23-1-1, 11KOs).
'Dynamo' Taylor, 30 from Middleton, hasn't lost in over six years now and avenged that sole career reverse to Tyrone Nurse in 2018. He then drew on a technical decision with Chris Jenkins during their British and Commonwealth welterweight title contest due to an accidental head clash that forced the champion to retire after round four. A win over unbeaten Darren Tetley, which included two knockdowns, in 2019, then a first-round KO against Tommy Broadbent in July this year led him to this title shot here.
Trained by Carl Greaves, 33-year-old Russian 'Ava' is a former world champion, who beat Sugar Shane Mosley to land the WBA welterweight crown in 2016. He has enjoyed five fine victories in a row since his last defeat. He won the blue belt against fearsome Spaniard Kerman Lejarraga, who was 27-0 at the time, with a ninth-round knockout, then he defended it via first-round KO in the rematch. A successul defence against two-time Sanish welterweight champion Jose del Rio was followed by a fine win over Olympian Josh Kelly in February this year, to set up him up for a fourth defence of his European strap.

Things you didn’t know about Chris Eubank Jr. next opponent Sven Elbir
Quotes
Chris Eubank Jr.: “The goal is to secure a world title by December, I said I wanted to fight three times this year. My opponent Sven Elbir is a good fighter but if he thinks he can stand in my way – he’s wrong, and he will learn that the hard way. 2022 is going to be a massive year for me. The middleweight division is on notice. The takeover begins on October 2.”
Sven Elbir: “I have a lot of respect for Chris Eubank Jr but as soon as I hear the first bell it’s time to go to war. I’ve been preparing for this fight for 14 years and I’m confident I will win. I’m hungry and coming from the streets, and Eubank Jr is not the same fighter he used to be.”
Background
Chris Eubank Jr. has making headlines since his debut back in 2011. He challenged for the British, Commonwealth and European middleweight titles in 2014 in his 19th fight but was outclassed by bitter rival Billy Joe Saunders, despite a brave effort down the stretch. He then bounced back with eight straight wins, collecting the WBA interim world title and the full IBO World super-middleweight belt too. He also won the British belt during that time with that infamous win over Nick Blackwell, which saw the beaten boxer rushed to hospital and placed in an induced coma, which he thankfully recovered from.
His second defeat came in the WBSS semi-final at the hands of WBA 'Super' World middleweight titlist George Groves, but he quickly bounced back to regain his IBO World super-middleweight strap by flooring James DeGale twice in a UD win in 2019. He then regained his WBA interim middleweight honours at the end of that year, but didn't fight again until this May because of COVID. He defeated top talent Marcus Morrison over 10-rounds five months ago and now heads into his 33rd bout with Elbir in his first fight of his new partnership with Wasserman Boxing.
His opponent, known as 'Batman', despatched of his first eight opponents with the first two rounds, but it was unlucky for the German in fight 13 when he suffered his one and only career defeat to Patrick Wojcicki (14-0-1, 5KOs), losing by just two rounds on two of the judges' scorecards.
Three fights later, in September 2019, he claimed his first piece of silverware as a pro with the IBO Continental middleweight title, then he became WBA International middleweight champion in his 18th fight and is still the reigning champion, earning him a No.15 ranking with the World Boxing Association.
He has knocked out 14 of his 18 victims, which equates to a respectable 78% KO ratio. All but one of his knockouts have come within the first half of the contest, 12 of those within just three rounds. Of his six first-round KOs, two came within just 50 seconds! He clearly has power and deserves Eubank Jr's respect.
Predictions
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: “Chris Eubank Jr. only fights against opponents he knows he can beat, such as an ageing Arthur Abraham or James DeGale; so without knowing too much about Elbir, I don't give him a chance.
At 32, it's probably Eubank's last chance to go for a world title, and I know he's chasing the IBF/IBO World middleweight title fight with Gennadiy Golovkin, who he could have fought in 2016 but didn't, but now fancies his chances once more knowing that 'GGG' is pushing 40!
His next opponent has scored a string of early knockouts, two within 50 seconds, so he starts fast, has some power, but he is in with a higher level opponent than ever before. He looks similar to Eubank Jr. on the bags, throwing high volumes of fast hands, however, I think he will lost on points or via late knockout. He has been 12-rounds before but not against a heavy puncher, so it'll be interesting to see if he can go the distance.”
