Chris Eubank Jr. vs Sven Elbir confirmed
The first UK event of the new partnership with Sky Sports and BOXXER takes place Saturday, 2nd October when Wasserman Boxing athlete Chris Eubank Jr. (30-2, 22KOs) meets Sven Elbir (18-1, 14KOs) at London’s SSE ARENA, Wembley.
They top a stacked card which features David Avanesyan defending his European championship against the UK’s Liam Taylor; unbeaten since 2015, and Cruiserweight contender Richard Riakporhe returning from injury layoff to get back on the world title hunt.
Eubank Jr's next opponent hails from Berlin and is the reigning WBA International middleweight champion. John ryder and Jack Arnfield are both previous owners of this belt that the 27-year-old German won on Halloween night in 2020. Known as 'Batman', the Berlin boxer has also won an IBO Continental middleweight title in the past.
He began his pro career on October 3, 2014, and knocked out his first eight opponents. Unlucky for some, especially Sven, he lost in fight number 13 to top prospect Patrick Wojcicki (now 14-0-1, 5KOs).
The Brighton boxer is currently being put through his paces in Las Vegas by the great Roy Jones Jr, and declared his aims to become a world champion this year, then target fearsome Kazakh Gennady Golovkin next.
“The goal is to secure a world title by December,” said Eubank Jr. “I said I wanted to fight three times this year, so I want to fight soon and then get a big fight by the end of the year. Having been WBA interim champion puts me in a great position and there’s a lot of big names out there, so it’s just about aligning those names and pinning them down, and we’ll do that.”
The Brit is spoiled for choice, as potential options include WBA ‘super’ champion Ryota Murata, ‘regular’ champion Erislandy Lara, while IBF king Golovkin is also in the mix to face the man known as ‘Next Gen’. Eubank Jr didn’t mince his words when he stated his preferred option of those fighters.
“I’ve been targeting Golovkin for some time now, and I believe that’s a fight a lot of the fans want to see,” he said. “I believe he’s actually fighting Ryota Murata next, so those two names are off the list for the time being, but that is a fight that will happen in the next six to nine months. We’ll try and make that happen in any way we can.
“Having been WBA interim champion, I’m first in line to fight for those belts, and they’re great fights, so I’ve just got to stay ready.”
