Undercard Highlights
There's a whole host of rising stars on this stacked card, including exciting prospects Frazer Clarke, Caroline Dubois, Hassan Azim and Ben Whittaker; all of which looked destined to become world level fighters in their respective careers.
Background
It's the local versus the Londoner as European and Commonwealth cruiserweight champion Chris Billam-Smith (15-1, 11KO) defends his titles to challenger Isaac Chamberlain (14-1, 8KO) in his coastal hometown of Bournemouth.
Ranked as the third and fourth cruiserweights in the UK on BoxRec, this domestic battle is being billed by BOXXER as a 50-50 clash for good reason, with both fighters evenly matched and just a single defeat each against top opponents.
Billam-Smith dropped a split-decision to rising star Richard Riakporhe, who is now 15-0 and ranked in the top 10 of all the governing bodies, sitting as high as No.2 with the IBF; and Chamberlain has only been bested by the formidable WBO World champion Lawrence Okolie.
However, CBS has put together a run of six wins on the spin since, and ‘Chambo’ has reeled off five straight victories, so the pair confidently come into contest with a good run of form and momentum behind them. Two of Billam-Smith's wins include a brace over Belfast boxer Tommy McCarthy, but Chamberlain's best win was against Luke Watkins; discrediting Dilan Prasovic in his last fight, who has been found out as punching above his level. When comparing opponents, ‘The Gentleman’ has beaten far better foes, with an impressive combined record of 151-100, which is a lot better than ‘Chambo’s’ lesser comparable number of 100-135.
The champion is the slight favourite at the bookies, but it's impossible to write off the challenger, who is a fighter inside and outside the ring.
What have they said?
Billam-Smith said, “I'm coming home! I'm so delighted to be fighting back at home in front of my friends, family and supporters. Atmosphere is why I got into boxing and on 30th July the atmosphere is going to be electrifying. As I always said, it doesn't matter who is in the other corner, I just want to fight back at home. In front of my home crowd, I always perform."
Chamberlain said, “This is a massive opportunity and I want to give a huge shout to my manager Mick Hennessey for sticking with me all these years, along with my trainers. Now we're on Sky, we're back in the big time and I'm ready to show everyone this is a different Isaac to the one they've seen before.”
BOXXER CEO Ben Shalom said, “This is an evenly matched showdown between two of the best and highly ranked British cruiserweights. Everything is on the line so we're sure to see fireworks. Billam-Smith will be riding high in confidence in front of his frenetic Bournemouth fans, whilst Chamberlain is fired up to cause a major upset and beat Billam-Smith in his own backyard.”
Predictions
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: “I do believe that Chris Billam-Smith is better than Isaac Chamberlain in most departments and should be the one that gains early control of the contest. But there's two factors to consider, the first being that CBS can blow a bit hot and cold at times; he can look sensational in one fight, then less than his best in the next. The other is that the Brixton boxer is as tough as they come and has been through adversity in and out of the ring, which makes it hard to see him being beaten comfortably or stopped. I'm pretty sure this fight is destined to go the distance. My prediction is that the champion retains his titles via a close points win in a thrilling fight. The odds for a draw are fairly low, so that could be a possible outcome.”
