Canelo to hang up his gloves for the green?
Latest odds on Canelo Álvarez to join LIV Golf and the PGA tour as star boxer reveals intention to turn pro
“This is the hardest game ever,” Canelo told the Mail, “Well, golf is harder for me.
“I’ve boxed since I was a kid. It comes easy to me. It is harder to be consistent at golf.
“One shot can be great but the next terrible. One round great, next day horrible.
“One tiny alteration in making the shot can mean a big difference.”
Regarding whether he intends to take golf seriously as a future career, Canelo confirmed: “After three or four more years boxing.
“So I can add more to my legacy before my place in the sport is judged by others…
“We’ll see. It would be amazing if I could make the [PGA] Tour. Fantastic if I ever got to play in a major.
“Almost everyone says it can’t be done because I started the game so late.”
Canelo is 25/1 to join the star-studded class of the breakaway LIV Golf series after revealing his intention to become a professional golfer.
The boxer, who fights against John Ryder this weekend, is even shorter at 16/1 to compete on the PGA tour, while competing in a golf major is 50/1.
Canelo added it’s his dream to play with Tiger Woods and a ‘The Match’-style one-vs-one game is 2/1 to take place, with the boxer 7/1 to win and the 15-time major winner 1/10 to take the spoils.
“I study Tiger’s swing,” Canelo confirmed, “Perfection. Only ever changes for a reason like some specific shot. I would love to play a round with Mr Woods one day.”
Canelo’s best chance of success is picking up a win in a LIV Golf event, where he is 100/1 to claim top spot. Victory in a PGA tour event is 200/1 and winning a major is 500/1.
The Mexican is the clear 1/18 favourite to win in the ring this weekend and he’s 5/1 to celebrate a victory with a golf swing.
A OLBG spokesperson said: “Canelo has conquered all before him in the ring and is eying up taking on the world of golf. He’s 25/1 to join the LIV Golf gang and 100/1 to land a knockout blow and win an event there, while a PGA victory is 16/1.
“The super-middleweight champ is 50/1 to play in a major and 500/1 to add a Masters, PGA Championship, US Open or The Open title to his trophy cabinet.”
New Masters champion Jon Rahm believes he has the capabilities to succeed on the golf course.
Rahm recently said: “Canelo is great at one sport and can be great in a second sport. It’s just not fair.”
Asked about this, Canelo answered: “Jon is a friend. I love him for saying that.
“And I have to say I put so much into everything I do that I actually believe I can be great at anything.”
