Celtic Champion Callum Walsh successfully defends WBC US belt
Irishman Callum Walsh successfully defended his US WBC Silver Super Welterweight Belt against Mexican Juan Jose Velasco, earning him another stoppage victory.
The fight took place last night in the Commerce Casino, Los Angeles, as part of the “Hollywood Fight Night” fight cards staged by 360 Promotions.
Callum’s hands looked very heavy as every punch he landed visually impacted Valasco, before dropping him in the fourth round.
Eventually, the damage proved too much for Juan Jose. He appeared to have a “no mas” reaction as he rested in his corner, claiming that he couldn’t continue. As he got up, the referee waved off the match, ruling it a RTD.
After the fight, Callum Walsh looked very calm – like he hadn’t broken a sweat. In his post-fight speech, he lamented that the contest was over so quick.
He commented: “I want to apologise to all the fans who showed up. I wanted to give you a fight, I wanted to give you more; but that was out of my control. We didn’t have time to warm up in the back as there was some early knockouts; we got rushed out here. I was just getting going and he quit. I just want to say sorry to the fans; I look forward to putting on a better show next time.”
“I felt like we were just getting into it, it was turning into a good fight – I was winning easily. I liked the way he was bringing it to me. He wanted to stand down and I wanted to show the people that I can do that too. If you want to get in the mix – I’ll do it; but he quit.”
Walsh’s promoter, Tom Loeffler provided the following news regarding Walsh’s next fight: “We appreciate you coming out. We’re gonna see Callum Walsh back November 09th on UFC Fight Pass. He’s going to go back to the East Coast. We have Serhii Bohachuk here, we have Omar Trinidad, we got Cain Sandoval – all of them will be on UFC Fight Pass November 9th, so stay tuned.”
