Brisbane floods delay Australasia title fight
Unprecedented floods in Brisbane, Australia, has forced a 24-hour postponement of the WBC Australasia super lightweight championship defense of Steve Spark (12-2, 11KOs) against Filipino River Daz (3-0-1, 1KO).
The championship event slated for March 2 has been rescheduled just 24 hours to March 3 at the Nissan Arena in Queensland.
25-year-old Spark, from Toowoomba, takes on talented challenger Daz, 26 from Melbourne, who is undefeated in boxing after successfully switching from an unbeaten (26-0) multiple martial arts career including Glory Kickboxing.
After running out of opponents in his weight class, Commonwealth title contender Spark is looking at securing a top-level contest against one of the world’s best boxers now that most international travel restrictions have been lifted with many scheduled flights re-started to and from Australia.
However Daz is a formidable hurdle for Spark and capable of causing an upset.
“I remain undefeated in several combat sports including boxing,” said Daz. “The Covid pandemic gave me plenty of gym time to tune up and improve my boxing skills. I know that Spark of one of the best boxers in Australia but I have come through some big challenges in the ring and know what has to be done to win.”
Spark and “The Filipino Flash” Daz will be share the limelight with Nikita Tszyu (younger brother of top ranked Tim Tszyu) who takes on undefeated Aaron Stahl.
Southpaw Nikita, 24-years-old, and brother Tim are both in the middleweight division and are following the footsteps of their famous father Kostya who won multiple WBC world championships.
It was Tim who inflicted the last defeat on Spark's record in July 2021 with a third-roind TKO in New South Wales.
