Winwood: “The better the opponent they put in front of me, the better I fight”

Alex Winwood is convinced the bigger the fight put in front of him, the better he is going to look.
The 25-year-old Noongar man has quickly settled into professional boxing. He remains undefeated after two fights after already notching a win over far more experienced former world champion Tibo Monabesa.
On Friday he made light work of Indonesian WBC light flyweight International champion in Perth to claim the title with a fourth round knockout.
Looking on, the bout went exactly to plan according to acclaimed trainer and man in his corner, Angelo Hyder.
The young up-and-comer said it felt just as good from inside the ring.
“I found my groove quite early in the fight and just relaxed and enjoyed my time in the ring,” Winwood told the National Indigenous Times.
“We started putting our punches together… the holes I was hoping for started to open up and we forced him into situations that were bad for him… we knew how he had to counter out or move out of these situations and we took full advantage of it.”
“After I knocked him down the first time it was very composed when he got up… I knew that he was still a very dangerous fighter at that point… we went back down to the body and just, you know, tried to keep him uncomfortable as long as we could.”
“It wasn't too long later in the next round that we dropped him.”
Winwood has relocated from WA to the far-north coast of NSW to train in Hyder’s gym.
He and his team are very bullish about what could be on the horizon, with the goal of breaking Jeff Fenech’s record of just seven fights before claiming a world title firmly in their sights.
Despite being a relative unknown and still fresh to pro-circles, Winwood feels he’ll continue looking the goods as time goes on.
“I think the better the opponent they put in front of me the better I fight,” he said.
“I had a bit more experience in front of me (on Friday) and that allowed me to use a lot more of my tricks and bait him into a lot more things.
“I just think as the levels progress that I can show more of my weapons. I haven't shown everything in the arsenal yet. But as the levels progress more things will come out.”
Winwood is due to fight again in June against a yet to be confirmed opponent.
Following Friday’s win his trainer expects him to be given a rating in his weight class.
