TURSYNBAY KULAKHMET L-KO7 JUAN CARLOS ABREU
In the chief supporting bout, Juan Carlos Abreu (24-6-1, 22 KOs) scored an upset by knocking out previously unbeaten Tursynbay Kulakhmet (4-1, 3 KOs) in seven rounds.
The 34-year-old Dominican Republic-born fighter had get off the canvas in the second round. He dropped his Kazakh opponent and was backing up during an exchange when he landed a hard right and that left Kulakhmet face down on the canvas and counted out at 1:25 of the seventh round.
The win marked Abreu’s first fight since he was stopped by welterweight sensation Jaron “Boots” Ennis last September. The win will likely see Abreu move into the world rankings and earn another payday.
It was a devastating loss for Kulakhmet. The fast-rising former amateur standout will have to regroup and attempt to rebuild.
Fight #9 – WBO Global Super-Featherweight Title, 10 Rounds
ARCHIE SHARP W-UD10 ALEXIS BOUREIMA KABORE
'Sharpshooter' was clean and tidy in the first round, lots of feints and good movement. Kabore was compact and patient behind a high guard, trying to get close enough to land, but didn't manage much.
In the second round, he was livelier and far more aggressive, but the 26-year-old from Welling was keeping his range just right to be able to land straight rights and left hooks and even struck the Burkina Faso boxer with a swift body shot in the closing moments of the round.
Now 38, Kabore is a former WBC International champion, a title that was preceded by Kid Galahad and has been on our shores for the past five years – Sean Davis; Gamal Yafai; Gavin McDonnell; and current champion Chris Bourke.
By midway through the contest, Kabore was running out of ideas and Sharp was making him miss with ease and landing at will, even switching stance at times.
Sharp's straight right hand was landing freely and he was putting combinations together from round seven onwards, finding the contest a bit easy, it appeared.
Lovely left hand lands midway through the round nine, as 'Yoyo' treads forwards but to no avail. He has barely landed a glove on Archie all night.
In round 10, the defending champion comes out confidently with his hands down low, dancing around in circles. Kabore takes a tumble as Sharp pulls him down, but there wasn't much in it. They end the fight exchanging blows, Sharp kanding uppercuts and switching to southpaw. This has been more of an exhibition match, with Sharp barely getting out of second gear against an opponent who didn't really have enough quality to trouble the Welling man.
All three judges ruled the one-sided contest as a complete shutout to the Londoner – 3 x 100-90 – as the 'Sharpshooter' solidified his position as WBO #2, likely to be elevated to the No.1 spot next month and have a real chance of landing at a shot at the new beltholder Shakur Stevenson; having only fought a week apart, they could easily fix a suitable date for 2022.
Kabore has lost three from his last four fights, so isn't really an accurate measuring stick for Sharp's chances as a challenger, but he looked neat and tidy, sharp and fluid, and full of confidence.
Southpaw Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov (18-0, 10KOs) is the current WBO No.1 and only fought last in September, but doesn't hold a World Boxing Organisation title currently.
It'll be interesting to see if Sharp gets his shot at the world title next.
