Quotes
Frank Warren: “Boxing is a game of ego’s and Anthony is keen to show the world that he can go one better than Lyndon and blast Spelman out early.
“Spelman is not an easy fight for anyone, but if Anthony comes through we’ll be on course for Yarde vs Arthur later this year hopefully.”
Anthony Yarde: “The people want explosive action and knockouts so I will not be hiding behind my jab and sending everyone to sleep.
“This will be all about me reminding people that I am the force of the division and I am heading right back to the top where I intend to dominate and reign for a long time to come.
“I respect Dec Spelman as a fighter but this is the chance for me to show everyone what they can expect when I get to share a ring with Lyndon Arthur.”
Dec Spelman: “If Yarde comes to fight then so much the better for me. Lyndon made our fight a technical affair that I was disappointed I couldn't really get to grips with, so if Yarde wants some action then bring it on. I will actually be his first test at domestic level so we will see how he looks on the night.”
Predictions
BBN Editor, Tim Rickson: “Dec Spelman is as tough as they come and he's proven it already by returning to the ring so soon after his 12-round war with Lyndon Arthur just six weeks prior. Although I think that returning to action so soon after that amount of hard rounds and damage incurred could take its toll against him in this next fight.
Apart from a four-rounder at the start of his career, no one has been able to go the distance with 'The Beast from the East' apart from world champion Sergey 'Krusher' Kovalev (34-4-1, 29KOs), who was almost stopped in the eighth round by Yarde.
Normally, I wouldn't bet against Dec not hearing the final bell, but after fighting just over a month ago, in 12 hard rounds, I think he might get stopped in this contest, but not until after the midway point, between rounds 6-8.” Read the full preview HERE
Background
Anthony Yarde (19-1, 18KOs) is a world title contender, who came so close to capturing the WBO World light-heavyweight belt against formidable champion Kovalev in his own backyard in Russia. He was just a couple of extra punches and few seconds away from stopping the three-time world champion. He has collected Southern Area; WBO European; WBO Inter-Continental light-heavyweight titles during his exciting five-year career so far. Boasting 18 KOs from 19 victories, the six-footer has a frightening 90% KO ratio. In the first couple of years of his career, before moving up to 12-rounders, he stopped seven of his opponents in the first round. Only three of his fights have gone past the midway mark, so he has a talent for hurting people.
Former English champion Dec Spelman (16-4, 8KOs) has never been stopped and has a reputation for being tough and durable. He hasn't won his previous two fights agaonst the newest British light-heavyweight champion Shakan Pitters (14-0, 4KOs) and Commonwealth king Lyndon Arthur (17-0, 12KOs) in his last fight on July 31.
Aside from that somewhat negative description, Dec is a solid, capable, good domestic fighter. It's almost shocking to me that he is only ranked at 15th in Britain by BoxRec, but he is part of a very talented division with the likes of Joshua Buatsi, Callum Johnson, Hosea Burton, former foes Pitters and Arthur, plus English champ Dan Azeez, and next opponent Yarde. So there's plenty of tasty fights out there for him in the future.
This will be a cracking contest, one which Yarde will be heavily favoured to win, but he won't have it all his own way against Spelman, who he has already praised and given respect to as a fighter. that said, Yarde will be looking to make a statement by stopping Spelman, something which no one has ever achieved, as a warning to his next opponent Lyndon Arthur.
