Undercard Highlights
IBF Mandatory World Title challenger Filip Hrgovic will clash with Australia’s undefeated contender Demsey McKean in a 12-round heavyweight clash.
Croatian star Hrgovic (15-0, 12 KOs), a Rio 2016 Olympic Bronze medallist, scored the biggest win of his professional career to date when he outpointed China’s Zhilei Zhang over 12 gruelling rounds on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk vs. Anthony Joshua 2 in Saudi Arabia last August.
Queensland’s McKean (22-0, 14 KO), who is trained by Tony Sims at the Matchroom Elite Boxing Gym in Essex, stopped Germany’s Patrick Korte in three rounds to claim the vacant IBF Intercontinental Title last time out at the South Bank Piazza in South Brisbane in what was Matchroom’s first event Down Under.
Background
Joshua and Whyte both come into the contest with a points win over the same opponent – Jermaine Franklin.
Neither man looked fantastic against Franklin, with Whyte just edging a mixed decision in November 2022 and AJ securing a convincing but uninspired unanimous decision last April.
They also share the same number of defeats. AJ lost back to back fights with generational great, Oleksandr Usyk, in 2021 and 2022, and was stopped sensationally by Andy Ruiz Jr. in one of the biggest upsets in boxing history in the summer of 2019. "The Body Snatcher" has losses from Tyson Fury, Kubrat Pulev and Anthony Joshua, all via knockout.
Two-time world champion AJ defeated Whyte by seventh-round knockout in arguably the biggest British heavyweight title battle in boxing history in December 2015. The fight had drama from the first bell to the last, with emotions spilling over and the pair sharing blows after the bell and having to be pulled apart, AJ getting wobbled for the first time in his career, all culminating in an explosive knockout.
That victory evened up the score after Dillian beat AJ in the amateurs in 2009 before Joshua won an Olympic gold medal at London 2012 which kick-started his meteoric rise to global stardom.

Predictions
Tim Rickson BBN Editor: “Joshua hasn't looked the same explosive puncher he once was since his defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr. He has lost that confidence that comes with being unbeaten and feeling invincible. I don't believe he will ever get that edge back but a knockout win could help enormously, which is what I think will happen in this fght with Whyte. I respect Whyte, he's fun to watch but have never truly understood the hype around him. It was obvious to me that he stood very little chance against Tyson Fury and his challenge was disappointing considering how long he had waited for his chance at the world title. Against Joshua, he knows he can hurt him so his plan has to be to start fast and overwhelm him early, but AJ knows how to beat him and knows how susceptible he is to that uppercut on the inside. Joshua has had one learning fight with Derrick James and should be improved for their second fight together. I don't think he has the capacity to improve that greatly, but I do expect to see something new in him. Joshua hasn't scored a knockout in over two and a half years, so this could go the full 12, but with the power these two guys have and their history, I think it will finish inside the distance. If Whyte hurts Joshua, then he'll be in big trouble. For me, I think AJ wins by stoppage. It's impossible to predict whether that will be early, mid or late, because we don't know what Joshua is going to be like in his fights now. He used to be fast out the blocks and explosive, but he's not the same anymore. He is trying to be a more rounded boxer with an array of skills to draw upon, so I think he'll approach this as a 12-round fight and be patient and clever, so I think the knockout might come past the midway mark.”
