Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder could still take place in 2024
Anthony Joshua triumphed over Otto Wallin on December 23 in Riyadh, but his intended next opponent, Deontay Wilder, didn't hold up his side of the bargain in the co-main event where he was bested by huge underdog, Joseph Parker.
Long-term rivals, Joshua and Wilder, had signed to fight twice in 2024 but a third loss within his last four fights has seen the mega-fight go from a certainty to hanging on by a threat.
Matchroom Boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn, immediately said after the fight that they will dismiss fallen fighter Wilder and target IBF #1 Filipino Hrgovic instead.
But the Watford warrior has offered a glimmer of hope to "The Bronze Bomber" by saying he would still entertain the fight.
AJ stated, “Me and him can still get it on, we can still get it cracking.
“I believe I’m a massive threat. I still think Wilder is a threat, and I still think it does amazing numbers if you get it on. But I’ll leave that down to my management, trainers, promoters, to make the decision. I’m down to fight anyone, whenever, and whoever.”
Matchroom Boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn, has other plans though, "We signed for Wilder, he lost. Maybe it's a blessing because AJ wants to become a three-weight world champion.
"It's gonna be AJ vs Hrgovic for the world title."
Wilder has only won three from his last seven bouts and, at the age of 38, with two brutal knockout defeats sustained from Tyson Fury, many now believe he has reached the end of his boxing career, especially after his negative, jittery performance against Joseph Parker last weekend.
Who should Wilder fight next?
