Undercard Highlights
Liverpool’s Natasha ‘Miss GB’ Jonas (10-2-1, 7KOs) faces former world champ Chris 'El Bombon Asesino' Namus (25-6-0, 1NC, 8KOs) for the vacant WBO Female World Super-Welterweight Championship.
Jonas was all set to fight Ewa Piatkowska for the crown, but the Polish fighter contracted Covid and was forced to withdraw and instead ‘Miss GB’ must now face the experienced Uruguayan in her third shot at World title glory.
Background
It's certainly one of British boxing’s biggest rivalries in history.
Essentially a newcomer to boxing, BOXXER's Ben Shalom has managed to do what higher-profile, vaster experienced promoters before him couldn’t achieve by making the Amir Khan vs. Kell Brook 15-year feud finally happen.
It shouldn’t have been this difficult to get Khan and Brook in the ring. Both talented, charismatic, popular and confident, this was a dream fight for British boxing at multiple stages in each man’s career and that included fighting for domestic supremacy early on or the pair competing against each other for a world title during their possible peaks around 2014.
Brook being the bigger man during the infancies of their careers could perhaps have been a factor scuppering any potential match, but for the majority of their respective times in the ring, it would’ve only required a move up or down from either boxer to get this match official.
Frank Warren and Eddie Hearn couldn’t strike a deal for the pair to meet when fighting under their promotional umbrellas. A ready-made fight pitting Lancashire against Yorkshire never came close until now and the original narrative has taken many wild turns since.
Everyone is fully aware that the best version of each of these warriors doesn’t exist anymore, and hasn’t for quite a while now.
When that first bell sounds, shadows of mid-thirties Khan and Brook will engage in combat years past the fight’s relevance and likely even longer past both their primes. Imagine if this engagement had immediately followed Brook’s career-best win over Shawn Porter when Khan was handing out schoolings to Luis Collazo and Devon Alexander!
Despite all this, the fight is still worthy of PPV and will be of huge interest to a majority of boxing fans in the UK especially and around the world. Who will finally get the bragging rights?
Predictions
Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: “A few years ago, when this fight was being called for by everyone, I would have sided with the speed and skill of Amir Khan, but now I'm leaning towards bigger man Kell Brook. Considering their advanced age and the recent inactivity, I think it'll come down to fitness and toughness. Khan hasn't fought for over two and a half years and that was against a faded Billy Dib, which was more like an exhibition match. Kell Brook fought the world's number one pound for pound fighter only a year ago, so he was operating at the highest level during his last fight. He had three wins against quite decent opposition prior to that third career defeat, whereas Amir's last three victories were not that credible.
Like many others, I'm flitting from one side to the other. My gut instinct is that Khan's speed and freshness should be the deciding factor to win this fight, but I can see Brook scoring a knockdown and that could spell the end for Khan. Each of these warriors fights with their heart on their sleeves, so I think it'll be a war from the first bell.”
