Amir Khan and Kell Brook Fight Could Finally be Made This Year
Amir Khan: "I called Eddie Hearn and I said, 'Let's make it happen.'"
A clash between British boxers Amir Khan and Kell Brook could be agreed later in 2021 in what would remain a fascinating clash between the two former world champions.
Both men have been compared with each other throughout their careers and, due to various reasons, most notably being signed up with different promoters, a deal has yet to be agreed for the two to meet.
Despite Khan and Brook being at the back end of their careers now, this is still a fight that would draw a great deal of interest among British boxing fans. It would also finally settle a score as to who is the better boxer.
A Return to the Ring Imminent for Khan
Khan has been out of action since defeating Billy Dib in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in July 2019. He did not retire after that contest but it’s clear the man from Bolton has taken an extended break out of the sport to work on other projects.
In a reality show featuring him and his wife, Khan confirmed he wants to return to the ring in 2021. He is likely to have a warm-up fight before Brook, but a clash with his rival is the priority and it is something he has instructed his promotors to work on.
Khan remains in training and, as soon as he gets a date for his next bout, he is likely to step up his workload.
Brook Looking to Bounce Back From Crawford Defeat
Brook has also not been very active over the last couple of years – he has fought just twice since 2018. His last appearance came against Terence Crawford where he was beaten in the fourth round of that WBO welterweight contest.
The Sheffield boxer is likely to remain at welterweight, which opens the door to face Khan. Special K now has a professional record of 39-3. His three defeats have all come against three of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the sport.
At the age of 35, a fight with Khan could be his last huge contest to be involved in. It could either take place in Manchester or Sheffield in an arena or stadium fight before the end of the summer.
Conor Benn May Be in Line to Fight the Winner
The winner of the Khan-Brook fight could face Conor Benn further down the road. The exciting up and coming welterweight is 1/16 in the betting boxing to beat Adrian Granados in his next fight on the 31st July.
Impressively, Benn is 18-0 in the ring. He produced a stunning performance to stop the experienced Samuel Vargas in the first round back in April to retain the WBA Continental welterweight title.
A clash with Khan or Brook would be most likely desirable to the Destroyer as they are big names in British boxing. Victory against either of those men could elevate him a step closer to a world title fight.
For now, Khan and Brook will be focusing on securing a fight in 2021. It could prove to be one of the best domestic showdowns of the year.
