Delhi Calling: WBC India Featherweight glory is at stake
With the sport of professional boxing on the rise in India and the country starting to once more host sporting events, two of the nations aspiring pugilists will step over the ropes on March 26 to clash for the inaugural World Boxing Council India featherweight championship strap.
Top 10 Indian featherweight Amey Nitin (7-4, 3KOs) and India's No.1 bantamweight Satnam Singh (9-1, 4KOs) will clash for the WBC India Featherweight belt in an historic match in Delhi.
26-year-old Amey Nitin will look to continue his rich vein of form as he prepares to take on Satnam Singh for the aforementioned 126 pounds WBC domestic crown.
Nitin, holding a pro record of seven wins and four losses since turning to the professional ranks in 2019 is coming off three impressive back to back to back victories, but can he take the winning streak to four in a row and claim the WBC regional glory? March 26 will tell the story.
For his part, at 25-years young, Satnam Singh is on a six-fight winning run since his last loss in the squared circle back in 2019. His sole career loss was when he took a fight abroad in China, ambitiously jumping up from four rounds to 10 in just his fourth pro fight. He lost by mixed decision, one judge scoring the contest as a draw.
The fighting pride of his region takes a pro record of nine wins and one loss into this much-anticipated WBC India title showdown hosted by the team at United Professional Boxing.
The World Boxing Council only begun their groundbreaking boxing movement into India last year, in the summer of 2021. President Mauricio Sulaiman announced the formation of the WBC India committee last August, in collaboration with the Indian Boxing Council, as the WBC’s strategic governing body and ally in India.
The WBC India title was first contested in December 2021 when Chennai's Sabari J (5-1, 1KO) became the inaugural winner of the of welterweight version, defeating the more experienced Akashdeep Singh (8-2) of Chandigarh in an eight-round bout, winning by majority decision of 76-76, 79-73 and 79-73 in the professional event 'Hell's Bay', promoted by Raja Prashanth Singh of TIAR (The Indian Art Revolution) at the Gachibowli Stadium.
