Amanda Serrano ready for a firestorm with Erika Cruz
Madison Square Garden will once again be part of another historic main fight in women’s boxing, when Amanda Serrano, from Puerto Rico and who is the current unified 126-pound champion, fights WBA champion, Érika Cruz, from Mexico, on February 4, 2023, inking another chapter of the keen rivalry between the two countries.
Serrano (43-2-1, 30KO), champion in seven categories, will seek to fulfill her dream of giving Puerto Rico its first undisputed champion, a feat that has not yet been achieved in the women’s branch of that country.
The exciting fight between Puerto Rico and Mexico will take place at the Hulu Theater, located in Madison Square Garden, and will be broadcast live on DAZN.
Southpaw Serrano's most recent fight was in September, when she defeated undefeated world champion Sarah Mahfoud of Denmark by unanimous decision. That comeback fight followed on five months after her historic clash with Irish superstar Katie Taylor, when the pair made history as the first females to headline at the famous Gardens. 'The Real Deal' was edged in an epic war via split decision, and the fans have been calling for a rematch ever since.
Managed by Cesar Bellic, Erika Cruz (15-1, 3KO) is also southpaw and won the WBA belt in April 2021, when she defeated former two-division world champion Jelena Mrdjenovich from Canada by technical decision in New York.
The 32-year-old from Mexico City is known as 'Dinamita' and she holds the last piece of the puzzle for Serrano to become Puerto Rico's first undisputed female champion, but Cruz has only lost once in her second fight, which was a narrow points defeat over four two-minute rounds when she was just starting out.
