Winner of Tommy Langford vs Jason Welborn ordered to face Mark Heffron next – and other championship news
BBBofC issue latest championship circular on August 9
British Board order Mark Heffron (20-2) as the mandatory opponent for the winner of the eagerly-anticipated rematch between local rivals Tommy Langford (20-2) and Jason Welborn (23-6).
The Battle of the Baggies 2 between the West Brom FC fans will take place on the Amir Khan vs Samuel Vargas undercard on September 8 at the Birmingham Arena.
Their first meeting on May 4 at the Walsall Town Hall was a fight of the year contender with three-time British title challenger Welborn just stealing the decision by a single point against the reigning champion with scores of 114-113 twice and 115-113 reversed.
Welborn, who previously failed to capture the British title on two earlier attempts against Frankie Gavin and Liam Smith, has been enjoying a good run of form ever since he moved up to middleweight and caused a major upset when he defeated Joe Gallagher’s unbeaten prospect Marcus Morrison (14-0) in March 2017 to win the WBC International Silver middleweight title.
He was the underdog going into the Battle of the Baggies but managed to rock the favourite in the second round for referee Terry O'Connor to step in and issue a standing eight-count. The 28-year-old Bideford-born boxer weathered the early storm and came back to boss the following seven rounds but the championship rounds were very tight and Welborn got the nod from the ringside judges on his home show, promoted by Errol Johnson.
Now the Baggies fans get to meet for a second time in a repeat or revenge showdown, this time live on Sky Sports, with unbeaten powerhouse Heffron lined up, next with the contest due to take place by the end of December 2018.
