It’s the World Boxing Super Series favourite George Groves (26-3) against unbeaten Jamie Cox (24-0) in the last of the quarter-finals this weekend at Wembley Arena.
On the line is a place in the semi-finals against Chris Eubank Jr. and also Groves’ WBA Super super-middleweight world title is up for grabs.
The No.1 seed will be looking for an explosive performance to send a message to British rivals Callum Smith and Chris Eubank Jr., who have already booked their places in the last four of the super-middleweight competition.
But the southpaw from Swindon should will not be discounted. Many are already talking about who wins the potentially huge showdown between Groves and Eubank in the semi-finals, but the man from Hammersmith must get past Cox first.
The unbeaten 31-year-old is energetic, whips in body shots for fun and has speed on his side. He doesn’t possess anywhere near the same level of experience as Groves, but that means he also has less miles on the clock and hasn’t suffered the effects that come with getting knocked out cold.
So, being a hard one to call, BBN asked their trusted panel of experts to step in…
Joe MullenderEnglish middleweight champion
"I think it's a tougher fight than what people think is for Groves because is a dangerous fighter and has been widely avoided in his career.
That said, I still think Groves, with that little bit more big fight experience, will edge it on points."
Miles Shinkwin Former Southern Area light-heavyweight champion
"George is a very good friend of mine, I know how hard he's trained and his attitude would never allow him to overlook Jamie, who's a very dangerous fighter.
I just feel George is going to be too big, too strong and, ultimately, hit too hard for Jamie, and once he navigates his way past 3/4 dangerous rounds, he can take him out around half way.
He'll have to be switched on for every second the fight lasts though."
Shannon CourtenayAmateur English Champion
"I think as long as George Groves stays switched on the whole fight because of Cox's power then he’ll win by stoppage in the late rounds.
I don’t think Jamie Cox will be able to get past Groves' jab and it’ll just be a frustrating night for Jamie."
Leon McKenzie English title contender
"I think Groves wins by stoppage late on or points victory.
Cox holds knockout power, that’s my only concern for Groves – if he gets caught.
If Groves boxes smartly then he wins well."
Tey Lynn JonesMiddleweight prospect
"I think Groves is the better better but Cox comes with that power, especially early on.
I reckon if Groves can get through the first 3/4 rounds of Cox coming on to him, then he’ll push on to a points victory and even a late stoppage, depending on how tired and fatigued Cox gets."
Dean GillenSuper-middleweight boxer
"I met Jamie Cox when I fought Vijender Singh in Dublin; he's a top bloke"
There's plenty of questions being asked of Jamie's size at super-middleweight, but when you can bang like him, size doesn't matter too much.
Grove's has the size advantage, he's a quality operator and can box, but Jamie has the equaliser with his southpaw power!
If Cox can prevent Groves getting into his groove, then I fancy an upset – Cox by stoppage!"
Frank GreavesBoxing Trainer
"A lot will come down to Cox's mentality on the night, we've seen him get wound up before and Groves seems to be a master at winding up opponents!!
If Jamie is too aggressive, I think he gets KO'd midway, but George has looked tired late a few times and Cox is fit and fresh, so I wouldn't discount him if it goes past 7/8 rounds.
Heart says Cox, head says Groves. Groves just too big a step up for Cox at this time and after the relative gulf in opposition thus far."
Tim Rickson TR Sports Agency
"I like both fighters. Admittedly, I've been a George Groves fan since his win over James DeGale back in 2011, and I was willing him to win in both of his failed fights with Froch.
Jamie Cox is class fighter and I think he's great to watch. On this occasion, I think he has jumped up too many levels and will be stranded in the deep end against a man who has been in four world title contests and is the reigning WBA Super super-middleweight champion.
I think Groves will stop Cox in the middle rounds of the contest."
Jamie Arlain Retired boxer
"I think Groves late stoppage, taking nothing away from Cox because he's a great fighter.
But I don't think Groves will have it all his own way; Cox is very dangerous, especially early on.
Chris Glover Boxing Writer
"I think this fight is a massive step too far for Cox , at this stage.
Full credit to him for taking it; however, Groves' movement and punch variety along with his power will undoubtedly be the difference in this fight.
My prediction is a mid to late stoppage for George Groves."
Joe NealeBoxing Agent/PR
"George Groves I think wins by late stoppage, Cox is not a natural at 168lbs and is not the puncher that people think.
Groves will wear him down, similar to what he did to Chudinov but without the sluggish start."
Bart SkiProfessional boxer with JE Promotions
"That's no easy task to predict who will win in this fight. George Groves has some more experience in big fights than Cox, but Jamie has not lost yet.
Both boxers are from top shelves of world professional boxing. Goerge is the upper hand and betterreach and power, and I like his fighting style.
So, I think in this batlle Cox gets his first loss in his professional career."
Steve Wood VIP Promotions
"I believe Groves is too big and will punch too hard for Cox, who also having boxed at a lower level is at a disadvantage – Groves early KO for me."
