Tommy Langford rebounds from first defeat
Tommy Langford (19-1) marked his 20th professional contest with a shutout points win over tough Nicaraguan Miguel Aguilar (11-37-1) on October 21 at the First Direct Arena on the undercard of Josh Warrington’s (25-0) IBF world featherweight title final eliminator against unbeaten Dane, Dennis Ceylan (18-0-2).
It was six months since the “Baggies Bomber’s” last outing against Avtandil Khurtsidze (33-2-2) for the interim WBO world middleweight title but he showed no signs of ring rust as he decked the Central American in the third-round on the way to a landslide points victory – 60-53 – moving up to 19-1 on his impressive record.
The 28-year-old commented post-fight "It was a straight-forward win. I needed to get back out the door, haven't fought since my loss so needed to blow the cobwebs away.
"If I'm being ultra-critical of myself then I could have got rid of him, I dropped him with the body shots and hurt him and then he just ran away after that, but it's onto the next one now."
The former WBO Inter-Continental titlist, now ranked #11 with the WBO is next due to defend his Lonsdale belt against the mandated Jack Arnfield (24-2) before the end of January 2018, as ordered by the Board.
Arnfield’s manager Steve Wood won the purse bids for the championship contest so it will likely be staged in either Blackpool or Manchester in December.
“Edge of Glory”
Headliner Josh Warrington (26-0) stopped Dennis Ceylan (18-1-2) in the 10th-round of their mandated final eliminator for the IBF world featherweight title. The Leeds Warrior will meet IBF world titlist Lee SElby next.
Chief support was supplied by Huddersfield’s British super-lightweight champion Tyrone Nurse (35-3-2) against undefeated Chorley man Jack Catterall (19-0), who outworked the champion to rip his title away from him on a unanimous decision.
Rising Manchester star Zelfa "Brown Flash" Barrett (19-0) collected his first professional title – the English super-featherweight belt – when he halted Chris Conwell (9-3) in the fourth-round after repeated body shots dropped "Conny" twice.
Leicester's Lyon Woodstock (10-0) captured the WBO European super-featherweight with a unanimous points win over Craig Poxton (9-3) in a barnstormer of a fight where the pair stood toe-to-toe for 10 action-packed rounds.
