JE Boxing is the only professional boxing platform in Kent, owned by Joe ‘The Moroccan Machine’ Elfidh.
As a fighter, Joe was a two-weight Central Area title contender, defeated a future England champion, and shared the ring with British, Commonwealth and World champions.
As a promoter, he is single-handedly bringing big-time boxing back to The Garden of England and his hometown of Worksop.
Welcome to his weekly column – exclusive to BBN.
‘Razor’ Rod Smith returns
I have been working hard on the next JE Promotions show in Worksop on July 1st.
Making his comeback is Rod Smith (7-1) after 20 months out. He’ll be headlining the show in a six-rounder against Edgar Sniedze (4-19).
The Latvian may not have an impressive record and has only ever won fights in his home country but whenever he comes over to England he gives his opponents a hard night’s work. All four of his wins have come by knockout so you have to be disciplined against him.
‘Razor’ is a six-foot middleweight from Yorkshire with seven wins and one loss. His only defeat was to Tom Doran, who came in half a stone heavier at the weigh-in.
Smith’s best scalp so far is a points win over two-time Commonwealth title contender Liam Cameron in his fifth fight in December 2013.
He’s only 26 and been involved in two 10-rounders already so I’ve got high hopes for him but we’ll only move him on at the right time.
AJ v Wlad
I’ve got to mention the AJ v Wlad fight on the last weekend of April and how good it was.
It surprised me that he won, I thought he was gone in the sixth round but shows that he has a good heart.
I think there’s a rematch clause in the contract and Klitschko has got nothing to lose so he may as well take the rematch and I’m sure he’ll come back firing. I saw that he may be going after Deontay Wilder though so it’ll be interesting to see how it all pans out.
I’d like to see Tyson Fury in with AJ next. That’s got to be the fight to determine who the world’s best heavyweight is, and it would be good to have an all-British fight, so that the titles stay here with us.
The record-breaking fight at Wembley helps boxing all round. It just helps to promote the sport and raise awareness.
I’d like to think that there will be more fans with an added incentive to buy a ticket for shows like mine. If boxing fans can fill up a 90,000 capacity stadium then it would be great for it to have a knock on effect for small hall shows that usually hold around a thousand to be filled up.
There’s so many unlicensed shows around that people like to go to but they need to realize that pro boxing is completely different and that’s the show that they need to experience.
You could feel the atmosphere at the national stadium through the TV but at a live show, the atmosphere is something else! It’s something everyone should experience.
GGG v Canelo
Straight after the biggest fight in Britain since the last war, there was a fight of the same size for Mexicans over in Las Vegas.
Canelo defeated countryman Chavez Jr. in a one-sided fight that was nowhere near as exciting as our big fight the weekend before.
However, it has served to set up the biggest fight in boxing between Golovkin and Canelo for September.
Last fight, GGG just scraped a points win against Jacobs but he’ll bring his A-game for this bout with Canelo. He didn’t look the same in his last outing, maybe he got complacent after winning 36 straight bouts with 33 KO’s, or he might not have had a good camp.
Canelo will be as good and strong as ever and he’ll have something to prove in this fight as he’s already been written off by many and will certainly be the underdog in this mega-fight.
It’s another big fight for boxing so the fans are the real winners!
