Joe Mullender talks about his love of fighting ahead of ring return
‘Smokin’ Joe Mullender (10-2 4KOs) returns to the ring for the first time this year at the Brentwood Centre on October 20.
The ex-English and IBF European middleweight titlist is relishing fighting in his home town for the first time since his 11-round TKO of Welsh Area champion Lee Churcher (13-4-1 4KOs) last December at the Copper Box Arena on the undercard of James DeGale’s shock world title defeat to Caleb Truax.
In his 14th pro fight, the 32-year-old takes on Ben Capps (15-4-2) over 10 three-minute rounds. Capps, a 25-year-old Mancunian, comes into the fight off the back of two successive first-round KO victories. His last five wins have all ended early and this will serve as just his second fight in the UK, having campaigned in Australia since his 2011 debut in Melbourne.
Mullender, a father of two, said, "I love fighting, I just wanna have a fight; I enjoy fighting, I enjoy being in a war, and obviously to take the money home to my family is the most importtant thing, but I'd rather be in dog fights than boring fights and not having a mark on me."
The middleweight from Brentwood, trained by Jamie Williams at the Legends Gym, is keen to shake off the ring rust on October 20 and return to title fights as soon as possible.
Mullender was crowned the new English middleweight champion in June 2017 after beating stablemate Lee Markham in their rematch to avenge a previous loss at the O2 Arena in 2016. He decided to vacate his English title in September to secure a shot at and subsequently claim the IBF ranking title but is determined to bag a British title showdown with Mark Heffron next.
