Nick Webb gets tough test on Haye Day II undercard against Hari Miles
Exciting heavyweight from Chertsey, Surrey – Nick Webb (5-0) will face a stern examination when he goes up against the ‘H-Bomb’ Hari Miles (9-9) over four rounds on the Haye Day II show at The O2 this Saturday, live on freeview channel Dave.
The explosive heavyweight, managed by former World heavyweight challenger Scott Welch, will be looking to extend his winning run to six in six, which includes five first round finishes so far.
Standing in his way is the experienced 6ft 4” Welshman, who has not fought since December 2013 when he suffered back-to-back losses to Youri Musafu Kalenga, who went on to win the interim WBA World cruiserweight title, and Wadi Camacho – the current Southern Area cruiserweight champ.
The southpaw met Camacho in the Prizefighter finals back in May 2013, losing in the second round, the only stoppage of the night, thus earning his conqueror an extra £2k in prize money for the knockout.
It was the second time he had fallen at the heavy hands of Camacho, remarkably from the same shot to the body that had ended their December 2012 meeting at the London Olympia in the seventh round.
The home fighter – Webb – said of his forthcoming contest, “Training’s been good, working on new things. Found out opponent last week so been working on fighting a southpaw. I’ve not come up against a southpaw in the pro’s yet but I did in the amateurs and didn’t have any problems.
“We’re about the same height and maybe he could take me further than the others, I don’t go in there thinking I’m gonna’ knock everyone out in the first round, I’m always thinking it’s gonna’ be a fight and every fight I have has got the potential to be my toughest fight.”
Having campaigned at cruiserweight since debuting almost a decade ago in 2007, the travelling fighter makes his return to the ring this weekend at heavyweight for the first time in his nine-year-long career.
28-year-old Webb begun his pro career in March 2015 signed to Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions outfit, after a short but successful amateur career, but recently parted on mutual consent.
The hard-hitter has so far annihilated Hrvoje Kisicek (10-15) on his debut at the York Hall with just 56 seconds on the clock; Martin Szatmari (2-1-1) in 1:57, Ferenc Zsalek (15-46-6) in 1:19; Angel Angelov (2-2) in an astonishing 26 seconds, taking just three punches to down the Bulgarian with a rib-breaking body shot; and latest victim Zoltan Csala (9-5), halted with a bone-crunching uppercut in 1:19. Remarkably, all five fights have added up to just 375 seconds of ring time, less than six minutes of action, averaging just 71 seconds per win. Webb now plans to take advantage of being on the big stage on Saturday night after such a destructive and exciting campaign so far, he commented, “I’ve trained hard enough for this fight, done everything I can do, so all I can do now is perform. “My last fight was on TV and I performed well, and I’m better now than I was then.”
The event titled Haye Day II will feature former two-weight world champion – David Haye as he competes in his second fight since his return from retirement in an attempt to further build on his chances at reaching world title level once again.
Hayemaker Promotions can boast a decent undercard topped by the tantalising English middleweight championship contest between Joe Mullender (9-1) and Lee Markham (15-3-1), which is sure to light up the Greenwich Peninsula.
Another spectacle will be the appearance of loudmouth American Shannon Briggs (59-6-1). The former WBO World heavyweight champion, aged 44, first debuted back in 1992, and despite being a pro for almost a quarter of a century, he feels he still has more to give.
Joining Webb on the bill is Southern Area lightweight champion Floyd Moore (13-6-1), former British super-middleweight title-holder Tony Dodson (32-8-1), and undefeated prospects – Kay Prospere (7-0), Ollie Pattison (2-0), Daniel Keenan (1-0), Joe Fournier (3-0), and Fahad Al Thani (1-0).
