Mark Bennett defeats Chris Healey on points
Unbeaten heavyweight Mark Bennett moved up to 4-0 with a points win over tough southpaw Chris Healey (8-5) on March 16 at the Harvey Haddon Sports Centre in Nottingham on a Scott Calow Boxing and JE Promotions co-promotion event, titled ‘No Hype Required’.
'Bad News' Bennett floored ABA finalist Chris Healey in the second-round of the four-round fight with a well-timed right hand.
The former unlicensed champion commented on his performance, "My right was landing all night long and I felt I rocked him a few times, I just couldn't get the finishing shot in, but I hit him with a right and he fell into the ropes then the ref stepped in.
"I made hard work of it, he was a very schooled boxer. I think I won three rounds out of the four, it wasnt my best peformance, but I snuck the win and I'll see what we can do from here."
Doncaster's Bennett has already dispatched the likes of Dorian Darch (12-6-1) and Kamil Sokolowski (5-13-2) in his previous two outings and has now worked his way into the mandatory position for Kash Ali’s (15-0) Central Area heavyweight title, who next faces David Price on March 30 in Liverpool.
The 31-year-old Yorkshireman, who only started boxing aged 27, is in a hurry to claim titles and break into the top 10 and he is on track to achieve just that.
Unbeaten Ekow Essuman (10-0) sucessfully defended his English welterweight crown against former British champion Tyrone Nurse (35-6-2) in the headlining fight. Scores of 96-94, 98-93 and 95-95 saw the Nottingham fighter's hand raised, who now calls for a showdown with Conor Benn.
Another JE Promotions prospect, Dylan Clegg (3-0), also secured a four-round points win. The former schoolboys finalist, trained by Michael White at the Fighting Fit Gym, defeated the seasoned Lewis van Poetsch (8-94-1) 39-37. The 20-year-old super-middleweight from Worksop has a huge following and looks destined to do well in the paid ranks.
Radford’s Omari Grant moved up to 8-0 with a points win over the durable Jamie Quinn (4-80-2) over four-rounds at super-lightweight and now has his eyes fixed on the Midlands Area title.
Newark’s Regis Sugden (1-0) got off the mark in his pro career with a debut points win over Steven Backhouse (3-11-1), as did Ilkeston's Kyle Hughes (1-0) outpointing Italian Victor Edagha (1-52-2).
Another debutant, lightweight Joe Underwood Hughes (1-0), scored the only stoppage of the night when he blasted Russ Midgley (1-28-2) away in just 56 seconds.
There were also points wins for Nottingham’s Paul Thompson (3-0) and Clifton’s Ryan Amos (2-0).
