Name: Luke Gibb
Record: (1-0)
Weight: Welterweight
Born: Bexleyheath, Kent
Residence: Bexleyheath, Kent
DOB: 25/03/1989
Nickname? “Everyone just calls me Gibbo.”
Favourite all-time boxer? “Probably Roberto Duran, Muhammad Ali and Tommy Hearns.”
Favourite current boxer? “Probably Lomachenko, to be honest.”
Favourite fight? “Probably the Ward v Gatti trilogy and Sugar Ray Leonard v Marvin Hagler.”
Boxing clubs? “Nemesis in Erith as an amateur and now I’m at Invicta in Sheerness with Ray Askew as a pro.”
Amateur honours? “Got to two Junior ABA finals, won a Four Nations silver medal, boxed for England against France, Canada and all over, won the the London ABA finals.”
Biggest achievement in boxing? “Early days still so I suppose winning my first fight as a pro and getting on the Team GB Development Squad.”
Toughest ever opponent? “Probably Ricky Boylan, we had four fights and it was always close.”
Goals in boxing? “I’d like to win the Southern Area then English and British, then whatever comes after that is a bonus. I’d love to win the British title, that’s the ultimate goal, and to win it outright because I love that Lonsdale belt. Obviously, being World champion would be the ultimate goal but, for now, it’s focusing on the Southern Area.”
Retirement age? “Not really got one, just whenever my body tells me to stop. I’d like to earn enough money to retire on but whatever comes my way really.”
Team? “Ray Askew and Sam Latham as my trainers, Joe Elfidh as my manager, my family and friends that support me, people in the gym with me Dave Jones and Tom Dallas.”
Boxing style? “Aggressive counter-puncher, bit of everything really, I like switching.”
Ring walk song? “Haven’t got one at the minute, I had one made for me for my debut but it didn’t really fit. The DJ at the club where I work is going to have a look at something for me for the next fight.”
Pre-fight rituals? “Nah, not really. I don’t really buy into all that.”
Favourite brand of gloves? “Winning or Grants, and I do like Cleto Reyes as well.”
Best venue? “Alexandra Palace. When I was abroad I fought for London against Dublin and had a live band playing me in, the venue was Croke Park in Dublin.”
Favourite football team? “Arsenal.”
Other sports? “Just boxing and football.”
Favourite holiday destination? “Thailand.”
Favourite TV programme? “Haven’t really got one, probably just Box Nation or something.”
Favourite film? “Braveheart.”
What actor would play you in a film of your life? “Jason Statham.”
Favourite music? “Probably R&B and house, depending on what mood I’m in.”
Favourite food? “Anything that’s bad for me! I like hearty meals like shepherd’s pie and homely food, especially my mum’s grub! She cooks the best roasts.”
Favourite restaurant? “Meze in Bexleyheath.”
Favourite brands? “I like Boxfit, clothes-wise probably from Reece, and also Vivienne Westwood – they do good shirts and blazers.”
Favourite superhero? “Probably Batman.”
Phobias? “Choking. I don’t like seeing other people choking, it’s not a bit of me!”
Motto? “Whatever will be will be, I suppose.”
Next fight? “May 27th in Mote Park, Maidstone against Jack Green.”
What fight do you want to see happen this year? “I’d like to see Tyson Fury come back to fight Joshua – Fury wins that. Golovkin v Canelo – I think Canelo wins especially if it gets dragged out longer for another eight months or so, he’s younger and improving all the time. I’d like to see Lomachenko and Garcia. A lot of Vasyl’s opponents get annoyed and lose heart but I don’t think Garcia would.”
If you could fight anyone, past or present, who would it be? “Probably Mayweather, because you get the most money from it!”
Tell us something that not many people know about you? “I’m the Managing Promoter at The Gallery nightclub in Maidstone.”
