of the top domestic showdown between Birmingham’s undefeated Tommy Langford (17-0) and Chris Eubank Jr. (23-1) for the British Middleweight Championship was announced today by promoter Frank Warren.
The figurehead for Queensberry Promotions won the purse bid to stage the fight earlier this month and, after taking his time to decide, Eubank Jr. has finally signed contracts to defend his Lonsdale belt against the third-ranked middleweight in Britain at Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena.
The tantalising shootout will be screened live on BoxNation TV on the undercard of Welshman Liam Williams' British and Commonwealth super-welterweight title defences to challenger Ahmet Patterson from London.
Langford, who holds the Commonwealth and WBO Inter-Continental middleweight belts, climbed up the WBO World rankings to second position since defending his Inter-Continental strap successfully four times; the latest victory being a seventh-round beat down of Finland’s Timo Laine in July at Cardiff’s Ice Arena.
Now, the Devon-born, Birmingham-based middleweight star has his sights firmly fixed on Eubank Jr’s Lonsdale belt, “I’m delighted that I’ll be fighting for the famous Lonsdale Belt,” said The ‘Baggies Bomber’ Langford. “I need a scalp of his magnitude to project my profile and Eubank is one of the biggest names on the scene at the moment.
“We’ve sparred in the recent past and, though you can’t take too much into that, I know what he does well and what he doesn’t do well and believe my style exploits his.
“Sure, Chris Jr. is dangerous but Billy Joe Saunders exposed his limitations with his quality and movement. I know I’ve got the tools to beat him.”
