Debut Corner with young flyweight Jordan Smith
This intriguing young flyweight has been picking on guys bigger than him his whole life. Weighing in at only 50kg but standing at 5ft 10″ tall, Ipswich-born Jordan Smith has been taking on guys up to 70kg and even fighting twice in one night just to get the rounds in!
BBN visited the famous Peacock Gym to speak with Jordan, who now resides in Chadwell Heath in London in order to train at with expert trainer, Ali Forbes.
What made you want to start boxing? “My school got me to start boxing because of anger problems. I joined Millennium Martial Arts of Ipswich where I got brilliant training and fell in love with the sport and knew it was what I wanted to do.”
Who was your boxing hero growing up and why? “Mike Tyson as I loved watching how powerful he was and fighting against guy much bigger than him.”
How old were you when you had your first fight and how did you do? “I was 14-years-old and I won an interclub show.”
How well did you do in the amateurs? “I didn’t do much amateur boxing, I just had one skill bout as I was finding it so hard to find boxing bouts because of my low weight category. So, I did some kickboxing fight where I won and ended up as the UFKKA Schoolboy kickboxing champion at 57kg. I also won National and English titles too.”
What made you decide to turn pro? “I was fighting regularly on unlicensed shows where I was fighting much bigger opponents, weighing mostly 60kg or higher while I was weighing only 50kg. Now I want the chance to show what I can do against people my own weight.”
What team do you have around you? “I have a brilliant team of managers in Mo Prior and Greg Steene who have helped me a lot with turning me pro and finding me a brilliant ex-pro boxer, Ali Forbes who has started working with me and taught me so much already.”
What sort of fighting style do you have? “I have a mixed fighting style as I’m a 5ft 10” flyweight, so I expect to be fighting people shorter so I can use my reach to my advantage to keep them away, but I also like to get in close and get my hooks and body shots in.”
What ambitions do you have for your pro career? “I hope to make British title one day.”
When is your first fight and who will be there in support? “My first fight is November 21st in Camden and I will have my Mum, Dad, Nan and Granddad, Sister, girlfriend and all of my friends in support.”
Any message for the fans? “Thanks for all your support and keep looking out for my future fights.”
