Amateur champion Paul Brown has officially signed pro contracts with JE Promotions
Debuting on February 24 in Maidstone, Paul Brown, a 28-year-old light-heavyweight from Margate, will be managed by Joe Elfidh and trained by Mario Michael at Pej All Stars Gym in Margate.
Brown commented on the recent signing, “So after nine years of boxing, winning titles in the amateurs and the unlicensed, we have signed our pro contract with JE Promotions.
“I will be working under Ian MacDonald and head coach Mario Michael,” he confirmed. “He has put the time and effort into me, who has stripped me back to basics, put me through a lot of pain and hard work, but it’s all been worth it to work towards this day.
“I know I have the right team behind me and I know we can go far in the pros. I've finally reached my goal. Look out the light-heavyweight division because I'm coming for ya!”
Known as “Bomber Brown”, the 175-pounder won the Kent, Sussex and Southern Counties in the ABA’s and got to the National quarter-finals losing out to an England representative at light-heavyweight.
Counting Joe Calzaghe as his boxing hero, Brown started boxing late, aged 18. He made up for lost time and had his first fight one year later when aged 19.
Despite winning titles, Brown switched from the amateur code to the unlicensed scene.
He explained why: “I went into the unlicensed boxing and had to give up the amateurs because my coach at the time didn’t really put the effort into me and it showed because my coach that I’ve got now has taught me all the right things and put all my mistakes right, and I’ve not lost a fight now in over three years.
“I decided to turn pro as I was constantly improving in the gym and I’ve been sparring with all of Joe’s [Elfidh] lads like Oli Edwards and Dave Jones, and they’re both unbeaten pros.
“I’ve got a really good relationship with Ray Askew at the Invicta Gym in Sheerness and it’s great sparring there for me.”
He added, “I like to sit on the back foot and let fighters come to me and to pick them off, so I’m a bit of a counter-puncher. I can have a tear-up and go forward or I can box; a bit of whatever.”
Brown declared his ambitions in the paid ranks, “I set myself a goal in the unlicensed to become a pro, so now I set myself another goal of getting a Southern Area title, but I’m going to take every fight as it comes.”
He concluded, “I’d like to thank my sponsors, Padfield Master Thatchers Ltd; PEJ Court Lettings; Ramsgate Roofing; Hartsdown Leisure Centre.
